Rachel Leavitt
Stake: Maricopa, Arizona
Serving: Mesa, Tempe, Chandler
Occupation: RN, Doula, Doula trainer
Contact: rachel.leavitt@gmail.com
Bio: My name is Rachel Leavitt. I am the mother of five children, all born naturally. Two in a birth center in Tucson, AZ and three in Utah. I graduated from the University of Utah with my BSN in 2004. Since then I have worked in postpartum, NICU, and Labor and Delivery. I loved my work and felt like it has added a lot to my knowledge base, but I quickly realized that there was a need to help support women more fully who are striving for a normal physiological birth. Thus my attention turned to teaching myself how to support women in labor. I received my doula certification from Childbirth International in 2010 and in Jan of 2011 decided it was time for me to turn my attention full time to just doing doula work. I have attended over 200 births with many varying experiences. I have supported women who have used the Bradley method, hypnobirthing, lamaze or their own instincts and intuition. Other healing methods I use to help support birth include reflexology, aromatherapy, hydrotherapy, as well as a strong background in research and science. I work to stay updated on current research relevant to my work as a doula which translates into better care for the women I take care of. I am also currently working on offering Doula Certification. Right now I'm offering it cheap ($50), because it's in the works and I need feedback. So if anyone is interested, let me know. Online doula training is available through www.trainingdoulas.com. My two goals for women that are work with are 1) to attend to women's mental, physical, emotional and spiritual needs and 2) to help facilitate decision making. Overall, my guiding philosophy is this: "Birth is the experience of a lifetime. Giving birth and being born brings us into the essence of creation where the human spirit is courageous and bold and the body a miracle of creation".

Amanda Wilcken
Stake: Salt River Stake in Mesa, AZ, USA
Serving: Metro Phoenix/East Valley area in Arizona
Occupation: Birth Doula(working towards certification through Childbirth International), Apprentice Midwife (w/Diane Bajus who is a CNM doing home births, she is also an herbalist and aromatherapist and teaching me those subjects, too. She is not LDS, but an AMAZING woman.)
E-mail, amanda.wilcken@gmail.com or my cell phone 480-223-8210. Last resort is my home number, 480-358-0847.
Bio: I have been a birth doula since 2006. Among other things, I use the Bradley Method, aromatherapy, acupressure and guided meditation to help women navigate their way through the rewarding work of bringing a baby into the world. I have 5 children of my own, 3 at a hospital and 2 water births at home. I believe in women, and in their ability to trust their instincts and birth their babies. I attend both hospital and home births as a doula. My rate is $300, I am open to bartering. I also do placenta encapsulation (for $150) and custom herbal preparations. As of September '11 I have taken a step towards my dream and started an apprenticeship with a midwife. The midwife I work with is a CNM, which in Arizona means that she can legally attend breech and VBAC home births. Birth is such a deepening and transformative time for a woman, and I am honored to be there to support her as she blossoms into motherhood!

Bio:  I come to the world of birth as a woman and as a mother; as a student and as a teacher. I have three unique boys, with three unique birth stories. My travels through motherhood have helped guide me toward my professional work as a doula, childbirth instructor, and breastfeeding counselor. I strive to lead a very simple life. Overscheduling is something I work hard to avoid, not only for myself but also for my family. My husband has a flexible schedule and he understands babies come when babies come -- this allows me to be available to my clients around the clock, with very short notice, in a minimally distracting way for my family. I have over 4000 direct-counseling breastfeeding hours, 1000 as a childbirth educator, and I have attended over 150 births as a doula.  After 11 years living in Chico, CA my family and I have relocated to the border of Kern and Tulare Counties, and I look forward to working with area families as they travel though the exciting year that surrounds birth.

I am a single mom of two girls, 15 yr old(adopted at five) and 4 yr old with special needs. My daughters birth and special needs journey changed my life and I became a birth worker. I am in my passion now and feel so blessed to do what I love to support my kids. I have found that education is the door to a positive birth experience whether it’s a natural birth or not. Our bodies are amazing and created perfectly to give birth. Once we learn how and why our bodies work, we are empowered to make better decisions and guide our own birth the way it was intended. I teach a lot about “UnDisturbed Birth” and how your partner can support you in the way you need him too. My classes are fun, informative and not your typical HypnoBirthing classes. I also lecture at the University and Nursing colleges, training student nurses in how to support Natural Birth. This year I am going to be teaching doctors and nurses as well. One of the girls who works with me is LDS as well. Finding the right care provider is the key for a good birth and I am happy to help answer any care provider/hospital questions whether you take my classes or not. If I cannot attend your birth, I will help you find the PERFECT woman who can. You don’t get a do over in birth – so educate yourself and enjoy it! Hugs…

Bio: As a mother of 5, I understand the value of an empowering childbirth education and the necessity of trained, experienced doula support, so I created a Southern California birth organization dedicated to providing those essential services to expecting families. I believe that birth experiences have the potential to be amazingly beautiful! OCEAN Birth is an acronym that encapsulates my values and philosophy. I believe that birth is Organic - everything essential for a healthy birth and a beautiful experience is already contained within each woman, and only in rare instances is it necessary to intervene in the divine process. Creative - not only is pregnancy and birth a time for the creation of a new little life, it is also a time of creation for each woman and her family as they become more, in every way, than before. Empowering - each woman, each family, has the opportunity throughout the birth process to lay claim to the strength, courage and dignity that is theirs! Attainable - the birth experience that you want can be yours! Noble - the sacrifice, commitment and love required to bring a child into this world make birthing a truly noble act, worthy of the highest respect.

Bio: My husband and I moved our family to Pocatello (from UT) seven years ago. I have worked out of my home as a Massage Therapist since 2003 and carry Young Living Essential Oils.  We have five children, each was born without medication.
I am passionate about natural birth and believe that every intervention carries consequences, which each family should be well aware of before labor begins.. God and nature created this process - trying to control or change the aspects of it creates disharmony, which affects emotion, healing, bonding and wellbeing; for the baby, mother and parenting.  My role as Doula is to safegaurd the mother (and father) in the laboring environment, according to her changing needs, without judgement.   I recognize birth as an empowering, unifying experience for the family unit.

Bio: Women’s bodies were made by a loving Heavenly Father to work right—including when giving birth. There is so much fear surrounding birth, even in our LDS culture. It doesn’t have to be painful to give birth. And giving birth can be safe and it can be one of the most beautiful, satisfying experiences in a woman’s, and her family’s, life. Birth can be much more gentle and safe for babies than is presently the case in the United States.

About me: Hi, My name is Amanda...
I completed my doula training through toLabor in March 2010. I am also a student midwife taking the Basic Midwifery course through the Massachusetts Midwives Alliance. Before I began my path towards birth work, I was a certified infant and toddler teacher. It is amazing to watch the little one learn and grow so fast. I also worked with a local camp in the summer that served special needs children of all ranges.
In 2003, I became a mother to my daughter who is a beautiful little person with her own special views on life. She was born in the hospital. My experience there left me feeling like birth could be something more. I started doing research and educating myself on birth, breastfeeding and parenting. Then in 2009, My son was born. He healed me and taught me what birth could be like. He was born at home surrounded by many loving women. I believe that birth is a natural process that should be left to take the path that it needs. Every birth is different and holds its own power. I also offer placenta encapsulation and belly casting as additional services.

Bio: I know that the transition into motherhood is an unbelievably amazing journey and it is one that I feel called to provide comfort and support for. As a survivor of a perinatal mood disorder, I am passionate about providing mothers with support during this incredibly important time in their lives and as the daughter and granddaughter of breast cancer survivors and the great granddaughter of a traditional midwife, my educational focus has always been on women's health. After being unnecessarily rushed into a surgical birth back in 2005, I sunk into a deep postpartum depression that lasted for several months. Upon the discovery that I was pregnant with my second child, I was determined to find a better way to approach pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. Through a local babywearing and attachment parenting organizations, I was introduced to the concept of doulas and homebirth midwives. From there I began official doula training in March of 2007 while four months pregnant and the rest, as they say, is history! I am a convert to the Church since 1996, I hold a current cosmetology license since 1998 and I am currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Psychology at Metropolitan State University. I have 3 children and have been happily married since 2002! Rate is $500-$700

I offer 2-3 pre-birth meetings tailored to the needs of mom-to-be and her family. Generally, if desired, one of those meetings would include attending a prenatal appointment. Personally, I have had two cesarean births, one home birth and one unmedicated hospital birth. During labor I attend mom as soon as I am able after I receive the call and stay about 3-4 hours after birth to make sure mom and baby are well settled. After birth I usually visit 1 to 2 times just to check in make sure that mom has the breastfeeding support she needs and maybe help with some home chores as needed. I believe that each woman is different and therefore her needs during labor and delivery will also be different.

Bio: I began studying to be a doula in 2008 officially through Childbirth International. I am now certified and I have attended a handful of births for now. (If only I would stop having my own babies..haha!) I have three children. My first was born in a hospital with an epidural and my last two were born at home (1 was a waterbirth.) I have have experienced a variety of births with one being early and medicated, one being at 40 weeks and in the water, and my last being at 41 weeks and 28 hours long. I am not ready to doula full time as my children are pretty young and I have a nursing baby but I think this spring/summer(2012) I will try to start putting my name out there again. I LOVE helping women through their journey of pregnancy and birth. I find it such an honor to be a part of something so sacred. I have found in my own experience that educating myself on birth and on what my body was designed to do, has truly empowered me. I feel that every woman deserves to feel respected and honored when she is giving birth. My goal as a doula is to help women achieve the birth they desire and to feel supported in the choices they make. As your doula, I will: Be available for questions or conversation as much as you feel is needed. I will be "on call" for the month surrounding your guess date(2 weeks before and 2 weeks after) I have a lending library with books on pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding, childcare, nutrition, and parenting. I will help you with a birth plan if you desire one. I will come to your house at least once to meet your spouse and discuss things you may or may not want me to do during your birth. We will discuss labor positions and any techniques you may be learning if in a birthing class. I will meet you when you are in labor whenever you are feeling the need for more physical and/or emotional support. I will stay with you throughout labor and I usually leave after breastfeeding is established.Right now, I am charging $200 but I am willing to work with families if money is an issue.

Bio: Many of my great grandmothers were midwives, called by church leaders.  Since the age of 11 yrs., I always wanted to be a part of birth work and feel like there is definitely a love for this work not only in my heart and soul, but also within my genes!  I believe that childbirth is the ultimate perfection of human love, the culmination of love making, meant to be the most intimate experience a couple may enjoy together!  I also believe that our Creator created our birthing body magnificently, that there is a perfect design for birth with a designated flow but NOT a designated schedule… and that women have everything they need to birth their babies calmly, gently, comfortably and well. When mothers and fathers spend time in preparing for a safe, calm, gentle birthing experience, marriage and family relationships are strengthened, the newborn has a safe, gentle arrival, and physical, emotional and spiritual needs are met.

My basic philosophy is to assist women and couples in creating the experience they desire for their family by supporting them through education, healing and sharing my faith that parenthood is meant to be an easier, more comfortable and even enjoyable experience.  I believe that if we listen to our inner guidance and follow natures way of parenting, beginning during pregnancy and continuing through birth and beyond, that our experience, even if not easy at first, will lead us to amazing
fulfillment and peace as individuals, couples and families. I believe Heavenly Father would not ask us to be married, have children and be parents and not give us clear guidance in these endeavors. I enjoy sharing my experiences and the many discoveries I have made through my personal experience, professional experiences and educational endeavors. Rates are posted on my website.

Short Bio: I believe that all types of birth are valid. I am pro-natural birth and think it is a very empowering decision a woman can make, but I understand it isn’t the right choice or option for everyone. I support women who choose to have an epidural, an induction, a cesarean section, or any other varying degree of normal birth. I believe the most important thing is that the mother and her partner choose these things based on education and evidence. The ability of a mother to make the decisions for the birth of her child is what really make the difference. Education is power and I believe in the situation of birth, it is critical! As a Doula, I provide education and support before, during, and after childbirth. I help provide comfort measures and encourage the birthing woman’s partner to be involved in the process. I hope that through my continued support I can help the birthing couple achieve a positive birth experience and memory. I charge $250, negotiable. I have attended 3 births, one at a home, one at a hospital, and one at a birth center.

Bio: I have been blessed with three beautiful sons. Their births have
taught me much about myself and helped me to grow and learn in ways I
never knew possible. My first two birth experiences were not ideal and honestly quite
difficult and included very challenging recoveries; one a cesarean and
the other a vaginal birth with an epidural. After my first two births
I knew that I wanted things to be different the next time I had a
baby. I began to research natural childbirth and it all just felt
right. I hired a care provider that was supportive of my goals and
whom I felt confident would help me to safely birth my baby. The birth of my third child was beautiful. My perspective on birth completely changed after he was born. I experienced how birth is meant to be—it can be gentle, kind, and peaceful. Birth has become my passion. I feel so empowered by my last birth experience that I want every woman to know her capabilities to birth.

I am available to take clients for birth and/or postpartum support.

Virginia
Rachel Herrick
Stake: Waynesboro Stake, Virginia, United States
Serving: Harrisonburg, Broadway, Timberville, Bridgewater, & Weyers Cave.  I work primarily at RMH, homes, and Brookhaven Birth Center.
Occupation: I am a doula working toward certification with ToLabor (formerly ALACE)
Email: reherrick@gmail.com, phone number available upon request
Bio: I fiercely believe in education during pregnancy.  Education about the changes that pregnancy brings, the normalcy of birth, the medicalization of birth, and the options available to mothers and fathers to work within a medicalized system to achieve the best birth outcomes for them. I help parents find evidence for and against certain medical procedures that have become the norm.  I believe in offering all the options when presented with a decision and then supporting the parent's choice whether or not I would have chosen the same.  I believe that through taking responsibility for the choices made in the delivery room parents will gain the self efficacy to raise the child they brought into the world, and that no matter what happened, you were always the one in charge of your body and your baby. My job as a doula is to help you know what the options are, what the risks and benefits are, and to support your choice as you communicate with your care providers.  It is not my job to tell you what to do, nor to tell the care provider for you.  I'm a facilitator, a conflict mediator of birth. I have three children of my own, the first born in a hospital, and the second two at home.

Website: http://www.birthspecialist.com
Bio: I believe that giving birth is a significant experience for women, and I am passionate about helping them make it the best experience it can be. I discovered an interest in childbirth in my first pregnancy, as I was reading to try to make up for what was missing in the hospital childbirth class I took. Coming from my background as an educator, I was shocked to realize my own lack of childbirth education, and I knew I was not alone. I felt that there were too many women out there who, like I had been, were approaching the monumental task of giving birth without good preparation. I felt drawn to helping other women give birth with knowledge and confidence, rather than fear. My own children's births have each been unique, and each has has taught me valuable things about how I can support each woman as she navigates her individual birth journey. I have been a birth doula since July 2010 and a Hypnobabies Instructor since August 2011. I offer birth doula services, including 2 prenatal visits, personalized birth support, and 1 postpartum visit, and group and private six-week Hypnobabies childbirth hypnosis classes. See my website for schedule and rates.
